Luke 6:46
[46] And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were going about your day and recognize someone that you know, from work or school, and you decide to approach them to say hello. When you get close enough you realize that they have someone with them, this individual could be of any number of relations to them, and they introduce them as their spouse. For their sake this would be a bad time to say, that’s funny I didn’t know you were married! Why? If someone holds the role of spouse they naturally assume and desire that they be brought up at some point with every other individual that also holds a relationship in your life. Why? If someone is important enough for you to have chosen them as the individual in whom you intended to spend and share your life with then they should have a strong enough impact on your life to be mentioned. Not only do they hope to have been spoken of but they also naturally want to have been spoken about in a positive light. Why? No one wants to be the spouse that is spoken about as if they are more of a burden and a hinderance then they are a help mate. Whether you mention them negatively or not at all you are expressing to everyone you know that they are an insignificant part of your life.
No spouse wants to be that spouse and neither does our Lord want to be that Lord. Our relationship with the Lord is to be the greatest and most important relationship in our life. After all our relationship with Him affects all other relationships in our life or at least it should. When He became our Lord He gave us a new life, a new purpose, and a new destination. He deserves to be kept in His proper place of preeminence in our life. Someone so great and wonderful as He deserves to be mentioned. Your spouse would probably be happy if they were mentioned even just once or twice, especially in a positive light. The Lord desires for you to mention Him to others and He can not be mentioned but in a positive light! A casual mention is not enough. Have you ever met anyone that spoke about their spouse what seemed like constantly and had nothing but wonderful things to say about them? That is how it should be with us and the Lord. Any time we have something good to say is an opportunity for us to brag to others about how good our Lord is. Any time we don’t feel like we have something good to say is still a great time to brag on our Lord because we still have Him and He is all that we need.
May it not be said to us by others, “I didn’t know you had a Lord.” When we allow Christ to be our Lord we will not be able to keep from speaking about Him. When we allow Him to be Lord of our lives we will tell others about Him so that He can be their Lord too. When He is may they say, in relation to who we have portrayed Him to be in our life, “Oh, You are the Lord!”
