Proverbs 25:11 - “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”
Suggested Reading: Proverbs 10:11-32
In the suggested reading above, the mouth is mentioned multiple times and leaves us with a great lesson. If we wish to know what is on television, we are told to look in the T.V. directory. What does a particular book contain, look at the page of contents. What does a delicious dish of food contain, look at the recipe. But if you wish to know about the character of a man, what is he like, and what is he really made of, just listen to him talk.
Matthew 12:34-35 - “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.”
Let’s learn a lesson about proper speech, speaking as a Child of God.
PREPARATION IS ESSENTIAL FOR A PROPER CONVERSATION
1. The heart must be right.
Proverbs 4:23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 16:23, “The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.”
2. The mind must seek wisdom and understanding.
Proverbs 5:1-2, “My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.”
3. We must learn to watch our mouths.
Proverbs 10:19, “In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.” Proverbs 17:28, “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.”
It is not necessary to tell everything we know or think we know. Learn to watch your mouth.
PRODUCTIVE RESULTS OF PROPER CONVERSATION
1. It blesses those who speak and those who hear.
Proverbs 10:20, “The tongue of the just is as choice silver:”
2. It can bring peace where there is strife.
Proverbs 15:1, “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”
3. It is refreshing and satisfying.
Proverbs 18:4, “The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.” Proverbs 25:11, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”
PLEASANTNESS RESULTS FROM PROPER CONVERSATION
1. Personal satisfaction.
Proverbs 12:14, “A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth:”
That satisfaction comes from having spoken in such a way as to enrich and bless.
2. Personal joy.
Proverbs 15:23, “A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!”
3. Personal well-being.
Proverbs 16:24, “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.”
Words have power for good or evil, therefore we should take care to watch our mouths.
