I Kings 17:5 - “So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.”
A pastor phoned the home of some recent visitors to his church, and a voice on the other end of the phone answered with a whispered "Hello."
The pastor said, "Who is this?"The whisperer said, "Jimmy."
The pastor said, "How old are you, Jimmy?"
"Four."
"Well, Jimmy, can I please speak to your mom?"
"She's busy."
"Well then, Jimmy, can I please speak to your dad?"
"He's busy."
"Jimmy, are there any other adults in your home?"
"The police."
"Can I speak to one of the police officers?"
"They're busy."
"Jimmy, who else is there?"
"Firemen."
"Well, Jimmy, can you put one of the firemen on the phone?"
"They're all busy."
"Jimmy, what are they all busy doing?"
"They're busy looking for me.”
Jimmy was hiding to escape those who were searching for him. There are times in our lives when we hide from people, circumstances, and reality. God commanded Elijah to hide after he had announced the rough period that would be a great threat to the northern Kingdom and the reign of Ahab. Elijah's life was in danger, and God sent him to the brook Cherith for his safety.
1. Hide (1 Kings 17:3)
God was teaching Elijah about having a private life.
“Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,” (Psalm 17:8).
2. Eat (1 Kings 17:6)
God was teaching Elijah to fully rely on him for what he needed to live.
“Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11).
3. Listen (1 Kings 17:7-9)
Elijah listened as the brook slowly dried up and he lost the water that sustained his life. Elijah then had to listen and obey the new plan so God could continue to take care of him.
In our busy lives today, there is far less quiet time than ever before. We need to take time to hide, eat, and listen; then, it will be much easier to follow Him.
