Suggested reading: Psalm 37:1-25
Psalm 37:1 - “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.”
Psalm 37:8 - “Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.”
Verse 23 is for a Christian, and speaks of a good man; a saved man. The Psalm teaches us how to act under pressure when things are not going well and when nothing is pleasing us. It shows you how to act when everything you do fails. It shows everything turns out well for the Christian. Psalm 37:40 says, “And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.” This Psalm shows the secret of real happiness. Some Christians have spent their life looking down, depressed and despondent and that’s not normal. You don’t need a lot to be happy. Psalm 37:16 says, “A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.”
Note some NOTS:
1. FRET NOT THYSELF
Psalm 37:1 - “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.”
Fret means mad, sad, or gloomy. The Bible says that’s NOT for Christians. The Psalm gives two reasons Christians fret. First, the prosperity of the wicked (verse 7). Second, is the hatred from the world (verse 12). Even the prophet Jeremiah wondered about it in Jeremiah 12:1, “…: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?”
2. FEAR NOT
Psalm 46:1-2 - “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;”
Fear is a great part of man's life. The Bible warns us many times and encourages us not to be fearful. 1 John 4:18 says, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” Faith and fear do not reside in the same heart!
3. FORGET NOT
Hebrews 13:16 - “But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”
Some forget God. Psalm 9:17 says, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Some forget the blessings of God. Psalm 103:2 - “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:” Some forget they are saved. We see this in 2 Peter 1:9, “But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.”
4. FAINT NOT
2 Corinthians 4:1 - “Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;”. It seems people faint at the worst times. Christians, when they are needed most, faint. Isaiah 40:31 - “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
We have a ministry, we have received mercy, we faint not. Let’s get rid of all these things that should not be in our lives and get busy in the Lord’s work.
Don’t Fret, Don’t Fear, Don’t Forget, and Don’t Faint!
