What Do I Have?

Acts 3:6 - “Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.”
I remember the time when I walked into a store in Bangkok during our first term in Thailand. I could hear a familiar tune playing over the speakers and realized it was “Country Road” by John Denver.
It brought a smile to my face as a song about the hills of West Virginia playing in a city of millions seemed to not fit. It made me think about my home in Texas and all the people and places I missed dearly.
I shared this experience with my congregation and how we should long for heaven the same way John Denver longed for West Virginia and I for Texas.
It was surprising to learn that John Denver is popular in Thailand, and the very next Sunday a church member copied all of John Denver's albums for me.
When we returned to America for our first furlough, the church had a going-away party for us, and that same member who was a John Denver fan began to pass out sheet music. The church began to serenade us with its version of Country Road, which we are now forever associated with.
It was a touching gesture from a man who didn't have much, but he gave us what he could to make sure we knew he cared for us.
1. The Lame Man Sat (vs. 2)
While it's heartwarming to hear that people were kind enough to assist him to the gate, it's clear that they didn't have the means to support him long-term.
2. The Lame Man Saw (vs. 3)
As Peter and John passed by, a man stopped them and asked for money. Unfortunately, they didn't have any to spare.
3. The Lame Man Stood (vs. 8)
The man did not receive what he initially requested, but ultimately, he received what was necessary.
Peter and John understood they did not possess the power to heal or save on their own. They recognized that they were simply vessels through which the power of God flowed.
As Christians, we also have nothing of true value to offer others except for the love and salvation of Christ. Let us follow in the footsteps of Peter and John and seek out those who need healing and restoration, just as they searched for lame men in need of a miracle.
