A Day In The Life

Proverbs 27:1 - “Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”
Have you ever wondered what an average day in the life of Jesus was like? Now that I have more time on my hands (retired, working for the Lord, managing the upbringing of two grandchildren, not to mention the other six), I find myself reminiscing about a day in the life of our Lord.
A song written in the 60s entitled “A Day in the Life Of:” is about a person who is reading in the newspaper about a successful man whose life ended in a car wreck. It turned out he was very famous having been knighted by nobility, yet his life was cut short. Futile, isn’t it?
A day in the life of Jesus as a boy might look like this. Since He was perfect, He surely never picked a fight with His brothers or sisters. Maybe one of His parents said to His siblings “Why can’t you be more like your older brother Jesus?” Imagine the disdain His brothers might have had for Him not knowing He was God. Do you think He could have been bullied by some neighborhood boys? Yet he wouldn’t respond in kind.
As a grown man, I see Him waking up early being hungry yet retiring to a private place to pray for hours. During the day He would be weary from traveling the dusty roads in Judea teaching those who wouldn’t hear. Oh, they heard His words but weren’t about to follow them.
I can see Him being surrounded by the Pharisees and lawyers being questioned about His form of doctrine. I hear Him later in the day being accused as a friend of sinners, prostitutes, and publicans being rejected again.
Jesus has no one to confide in except His Father who seems far away. Loneliness sets in, this may be the day He loses Lazarus, a close friend and He wants to go home but He has no place of His own. It’s been written “He never wrote a book, never earned a college degree, never visited a large city, and only traveled 200 miles from where He was born. He had no credentials but Himself and only a few out of thousands believed Him. When He died the only property He owned was His clothing”.
Every day of His life was filled with rejection, poverty, and disappointments so He could identify with our misery “but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” (Heb. 4:15). “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Cor. 5:21). A day in the life of Jesus. Just an average day.
James 4:14, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
Everybody’s day is different, but we all have one thing in common, the same twenty-four hours. What are your priorities for that period of time? Are we just gliding through life waiting for the day we wake up and heaven is our new home?
I’ll leave you with this thought: “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” (Eph. 5:16-17).
