He Giveth More Grace

James 4:6-17 - “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another? Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”
“He Giveth More Grace”
He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater.
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase,
To addeth affliction he addeth His mercy,
To multiplied trials, His multiplied peace.
What wonderful words for a sin-sick world and for Christians who find their way hard to follow. Grace for the daily life as a Christian, grace whose giver is God, and the supply is adequate. James gives us directions for enjoying the good life as a Christian. He tells us:
TO GET OFF OUR HIGH HORSE
Verse 6, “God resisteth the proud...”. You can’t please God and be a proud person at the same time. Verse 10, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord,”.
TO TRUST GOD IN ALL THINGS
Verse 7, “Submit yourselves therefore to God.” John 2:5, “...Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”
TO TAKE A STAND AGAINST SATAN
Verse 7, “Resist the devil,”. 2 Cor. 2:11, “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
TO CLEAN UP, INSIDE AND OUTSIDE
Verse 8, “Cleanse your hands ye sinners; and purify your hearts,”. Col. 3:5, “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:” To profess salvation and still hold to the things of the world is disloyalty and should be put away. If it seems too hard for you, remember our text, “he giveth more grace.”
TO NOT BE A CRITIC OR JUDGE OF ANOTHER (vs. 11-12)
James 4:11, “Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.” There is an old country song that some might understand the words better. It says, “Why don’t you mind your own business, and then you won’t be minding mine.” James is saying, don’t talk about others, don’t say bad things about people, and you need to receive grace enough to mind your own business.
TO LIVE EACH DAY AS IF IT IS THE LAST DAY OF YOUR LIFE (vs. 13-16)
Proverbs 27:1, “Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” Someone says, “Can we really live like this and not always be bothered by what might happen tomorrow? The answer is yes, because “he giveth more grace.” Just live every day of your life as if it’s the last and DO RIGHT.
