This God

Psalm 48:14 - “For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.”
All of the Bible speaks to the listening Christian, and sometimes there is just a standout word, from the Word, that wonderfully speaks to our heart. This verse was like that as I read it again today. As Christians age they travel paths they have not been down before, and we praise God for guidance.
“All the Way My Savior Leads Me”
All the way my Savior leads me-What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy, who through life has been my guide?
Heave’n-ly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know what-e’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.
The words of that old hymn bring comfort and peace to our hearts, but the truths of Psalm 48:14 brightens our day even more. Notice the Psalmist wording:
1. “THIS GOD”
So many gods have been created by and worshiped by man…heathen gods, all false gods. There is the god of self, the god of money and so many more, but there is only one true God. Psalm 48:1, “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness.” 1 Timothy 6:17, “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;”. So, the Psalmist is careful to say, "this God". This God who is great in the praises of His people (verse 10) and great in His loving kindness (verse 9). The Psalmist says, "this God" and continues.
2. “THIS GOD IS OUR GOD”
Not a god or the god, but OUR GOD. He is our God because He has given Himself to us. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because of that wonderful gift of grace and love, we freely give ourselves to Him. Jeremiah 31:3, “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” John 6:37, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”
3. “FOR EVER AND EVER”
Sadly, we live in a cynical society that asks, “What does forever and forever mean”? If forever and forever need explaining, let the Bible explain it. John 10:28-29, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.” Forever and forever are just a reminder that God will do what He said He would do.
4. “HE WILL BE OUR GUIDE EVEN UNTO DEATH”
2 Corinthians 5:1-2, “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:”
Is He your guide? THIS GOD wants to be.
