Covered By His Banner

Song of Solomon 2:4 - “He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.”
Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is an iconic photograph captured during the Battle of Iwo Jima as the Pacific War drew to a close. In this Pulitzer Prize-winning photo, six United States Marines are shown hoisting the American flag over top of the litter-covered battlefield atop Mount Suribachi. The picture captures the struggle, the companionship, and the triumph of that battle perhaps more than any other wartime photo has.
The history behind this dramatic scene is that Iwo Jima was a very strategic and fortified island possessed by Japan. Any enemy that would attempt to capture it would sustain severe casualties in doing so. Underground bunkers had been prepared to stave off any advances and an endless maze of sub-terranean tunnels kept the Americans guessing where the enemies were. When American forces flew this flag over the Island’s peak, it truly spoke volumes as to the accomplishment that had been achieved.
Long ago, God determined His battle strategy against sin. It would not be through earthly weapons or angelic forces. He would overcome evil with good. He chose to love the sinners who were undeserving of it.
Romans 5:8 – “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
For every heart where God’s love has conquered sin, God has lifted high His banner over that sinner, and that banner displays the love of God upon a broken soul. But what makes God’s love even more remarkable is that He didn’t just go into enemy territory and deliver prisoners of war. He lifted His banner over men and women who were the enemy.
Romans 5:10 - “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”
When we sing our national anthem we say, “Oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” But similar statements could be said about God’s banner of love over us, for it is always and forever erected over us to assure us and declare to others that God has set His affection upon each of His people.
