Hangry And A Bit Dramatic or Void Of Spirituality?

Genesis 25:29-34 - “And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.”
Have you ever been guilty of not being yourself or who you should be? Perhaps you chalked it up to being “hangry”. In 2010 Snickers aired a commercial during the Super Bowl starring Betty White in which she appeared to be playing tackle football. During a huddle one of the players says to Betty White, “Mike what is your deal? You are playing like Betty White out there.” This is followed by trash talk from Betty White. Then a woman runs over from the sidelines and says, “Baby eat a Snickers.” Betty White takes a bite and then turns into a guy named Mike, and we realize it was him all along. He just wasn’t being himself because he was hungry. The commercial ends with the statement, “You’re not you when you’re hungry! Snickers satisfies.”
All of us get a little hangry sometimes. Due to the busyness of the job the other night at work, I was unable to take a lunch break during my 12-hour shift. Towards the end of the shift, while being bombarded with several requests for help from every direction, I quickly became less than my usual self. My sudden change in attitude probably conveyed to those around me that I was of the persuasion that I was dying. There’s a chance that I became a bit dramatic. I temporarily failed to be the man I should be and am known to be by my peers. I didn’t say any cruel things to anyone, but my attitude stank. In a moment of weakness, I didn’t do anything crazy, like sell my birthright as Esau did, but I was less than Christ-like.
Sometimes one’s issue is not as simple as needing a little bit of food. What appears to be a physical problem on the surface turns out to be a spiritual one when it is looked into; that was certainly the case with Esau. He failed to value his birthright and it showed when he sold it for a bowl of lentils and a piece of bread. He thought his issue was a lack of physical nourishment, but it was so much deeper. This was not an isolated incident for him, but rather part of a pattern of bad decisions that revealed he was void of spirituality.
Do you find yourself occasionally less than who you should be? Perhaps you just need to carry around a Snickers bar. Do you battle with a stinky attitude even when you have a full belly?
Christian, you're not you when the spirit is hungry! Perhaps you’re not feeding the inner man with time in God's Word. The Bible says, “the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matt. 26:41). “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Gal. 5:16).
It is amazing what a little time in God's Word will do for a Christian’s attitude. Imagine what quality time in the Word would do for you. I have found there is a direct correlation between Bible reading and my spirituality. If you have been born again you are not void of spirituality you just might appear to be. What is the remedy? Don’t be guilty of feeding the flesh and starving the spirit. God's Word always leaves the Spirit satisfied.
