Great Is Our God

II Chronicles 2:5 - “And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.”

The first few chapters of 2 Chronicles record the details of the building of Solomon’s temple. As 1 Chronicles ends, we see that David desired nothing more than to build a dwelling place for God. However, God withheld David from doing so stating that it would be his son, Solomon, who would accomplish this. Solomon made a very powerful statement when he said, “And the house which I build is great.” Truly, Solomon’s temple would have been something to behold. Researchers have stated that if we were to replicate this temple today it would cost anywhere from three to six billion dollars! The house that Solomon built for the Lord was indeed great.

However, we cannot miss the motive behind why Solomon wanted it to be so magnificent. His motive was not so people would praise him. His motive was not to see people’s mouths drop when they beheld its beauty. His motive for making this building “great” was that anything less than greatness would poorly represent the God of Israel. And I even say that this magnificent building would have paled in comparison to the greatness and beauty of our God. Solomon said, “And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.” People from all over would see this temple and understand that this is the place where the God of Israel dwells. If it was nothing more than a worn-down shack with little to no effort put into building it, people would not have obtained a proper view of the greatness of our God.

I think of this in our lives today. The Bible states in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you,…” As believers, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost. Solomon built his temple “great” to reflect the greatness of God. People from all over would have viewed the temple and, though they may not have turned to the God of Israel, they would have had no question about the greatness of God. I wonder how people view God based on when they look at our lives. Do they see a life that has been truly transformed? I have heard it said that the only Bible people might read is your life. If that were true in your workplace or in your family, what view would they gain of your God? The only greatness that lies within us is the redemptive work of Christ. We are to present ourselves to the Lord every day so that He can perform the great work of conforming us to the image of His Son. The more people see Christ in us, the more they will gain the correct view of God from our lives.
