Working Together

Matthew 9:37-38 - “Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”
I remember as a kid, any time my dad had a project going on around the house he would have my siblings and me join in on the project. We would be doing anything from digging holes to changing the shingles on a roof or building a shed. At the time I did not necessarily enjoy doing these tasks. It was usually hot and humid. I felt like the tasks took forever. I did not know what I was doing most of the time. Nowadays, I am thankful for the time I spent with my dad learning how to do all those things.
Right now, in Japan, I am involved in one building project and two different building renovations and all those things that I did as a kid help me with these projects. Out of all the tasks that I had to do as a kid, there was one task that I thought was the worst. For some reason, our yard always had a ton of rocks, and every once in a while, my dad would send me out in the yard and have me pick them up. By the time it was all over, I would have buckets of rocks! It was miserable! However, sometimes I was not alone in the task. There were times when my siblings and I did the task together. I was so thankful that I was not alone. By myself, the task seemed daunting. By myself, the task seemed like it would take forever. But with help, the task was done quickly.
As I was meditating on Matthew 9:37-38, this time during my childhood came to mind. Very similar to how my dad gave me the task of going out and picking up the rocks, our Heavenly Father has given us a task to go out into the world and share the gospel. This is a command that He has given to every person who has accepted His free gift of Salvation; to go share it with someone who does not know Him.
The more we consider the task that He has given us, the more daunting the task can seem. There are over 8 billion people on the planet. How can one person reach that many people with the Gospel? With someone passing away every second somewhere on this planet, how can someone effectively reach this world with the Gospel? The answer is given in Philippians 1:27b when it says, “with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;”.
As Christians, the only effective way for us to be obedient to the command that God has given us is by partnering with other Christians to get the Gospel out. And so, we must ask ourselves, are we doing our best to get the Gospel out? Are we gathering with other Christians to go out into our community to share the Gospel? What are we going to do today to reach yet another person with the Gospel?
