John 20:19-22 - “Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:”
It has been said many times by many people, “Going to church does not make you a Christian.” That is true. But if a person is saved and really loves the Lord, going to church is an exciting and profitable time.
Acts 4:23 - “And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.” Going to church for the Christian is simply going to their own company. It is a wonderful time, and many blessings are received at the gathering of the Church. They include:
1. THE COMFORT OF HIS WORD
Each verse of our text contains the word saith or said and when we meet with the Lord, He speaks to us. All week we listen to other voices, many voices, but we come together now to listen to His voice. Psalm 85:8 - “I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints:”
2. THE ASSURANCE OF HIS LOVE
When Jesus showed them His hands and His side, the disciples were glad because they knew sin had been dealt with and death had been defeated. Isaiah 44:22 - “I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.” They now realized how much Jesus loved them.
3. THE GIFT OF HIS PEACE
In verse 20, Jesus said unto them. “Peace be unto you.” These are the ones who had been filled with fear, as we sometimes are, those who were worried about the future, as we sometimes are, and Jesus gives them peace. They were able to enjoy perfect peace, the peace with God, and the peace of God.
4. THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL
In verse 21, Jesus said, “as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” They were to declare to others who did not know the Lord that their sins could be forgiven and they could have the peace and comfort of His Word. We receive all the blessings mentioned and more when we go to Church and hear from God.
Psalm 122:1 - “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”
