Do We Really Need Bread?

John 6:35 - “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”
Growing up in Kansas the most beautiful sight I saw was the vast acreage of wheat fields. Every year in June you could see fields upon fields of golden grain cascading the earth. It was a sight to look forward to. Some of my relatives grew wheat on their farms and I was privileged to ride in the combines during harvest time. Although Kansas is almost entirely flat to those who have traveled through the state, they might miss the important process of the wheat fields being developed prior to the harvest.
In our verse today, Jesus says, “I am the bread of life:”. What bread is to hunger, Jesus can be for the soul. In almost any country you and I can sit in any restaurant and they’ll serve us bread. Bread is a staple. If the poor have nothing, they have bread. If the rich have everything, they still have bread. Bread is available everywhere, and so is Jesus Christ. He is everywhere all the time. It is said that the Turks built their temples open at the top to show that God cannot be confined in them, but is in all places by His presence. He is without bounds or limits.
Have you noticed that bread is eaten daily? Some fruits are only available in seasons. Not so with bread. And not so with Jesus. Bread can meet many needs and so can Jesus. He adapts Himself to meet our needs. He has experienced everything human nature has to offer except sin, though He has felt the punishment of sin far greater than you or I will ever experience.
Let’s look at why Jesus called Himself the bread of life. Wheat grows in the field, it is cut down, sifted, and ground into flour. It passes through the fire and then is distributed around the world.
Now consider Jesus who grew up before as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground (Isaiah 53:2). Had you seen Him as a young boy, you wouldn’t have thought He was the Son of God. He was just a boy like a staff of wheat in the field. But like wheat, He was cut down. Like chaff, He was pounded and beaten and like bread, He was passed through the fire. On the cross, He passed through the fire of God’s anger, not because of sin, but because of ours. Isaiah 53:6 says, “and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” Jesus experienced each part of the process of making bread: the growing, the pounding, the firing. So the next time you’re having a piece of toast, or a sandwich remember the wheat who came from the Word.
