The Word Of God Is Not Bound

II Timothy 2:8-9 - “Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.”
Paul is writing this while in prison in Rome. Imprisoning (and eventually killing) Paul was Nero’s attempt to silence the most influential Christian man of his time. As the apostle sat, wrapped in chains, he stated that the Word of God is not bound, nor could it ever be.
God has divinely preserved His Word for all generations. It has been said that the only eternal thing we will ever behold on this side of eternity is the Bible. Throughout history, men have attempted to destroy the Word of God and Christianity itself.
King Jehoiakim of Judah attempted to destroy Jeremiah’s message. This event is recorded for us in Jeremiah 36. As the book of Jeremiah was read to the king, he cut it up and threw it into the fire. He thought he had destroyed it, but God hid Jeremiah and Baruch (Jeremiah’s scribe), and Jeremiah rewrote the Scriptures. I am thankful that it is in our Bible today.
Antiochus IV ruled in 168 B.C. (the time between the testaments). He outlawed possession of Scripture and made it punishable by death. I am thankful that despite him and his attempts to destroy the Bible, the Scriptures live on.
Diocletian was the Roman emperor in A.D. 300. He ordered the destruction of all Christian churches, the burning of all Scriptures, and the ban of all civil liberties to Christians. Once he had thought he destroyed Christianity, he had a plaque engraved with, “The Christian religion is destroyed and the worship of the gods restored.” When he died, Constantine rose to the throne and converted to Christianity. He ordered that 50 copies of Scripture be given to him. Within 24 hours, he obtained all 50 of those copies. The Word of God lives on.
Voltaire, a French philosopher in the early 1700s, hated all things related to Christianity and the Bible. He signed every letter with, “Ecrasez l’infame” (crush the infamy) referring to Christianity. Just before his death, he said, “One hundred years from my day, there will not be a Bible on earth except one that is looked upon by an antiquarian curiosity-seeker.” I am pleased to tell you that within fifteen years of his death, the Geneva Bible Society purchased his home and used it as a base for printing and distributing the Bible across the globe.
We serve a God who has given us an eternal book. We can read it, study it, apply it, trust it, and live it. We can know God through His precious Word. Christian, do not take your Bible for granted. Know your Bible and, thereby, know the God of your Bible.
