Matthew 6:27 - “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?”
A man was constantly worrying that somebody was under his bed. He went to a counselor for months who was willing to help him and paid the counselor a lot of money.
Eventually, the man did not return for a visit. A few weeks later, the counselor met the man on the street and asked him why he had not returned. The man replied, “I met a friend who gave me some great advice for free. It worked perfectly”. The counselor, shocked at the news, asked what advice he had been given. The man replied, “He asked me to cut the legs of the bed down to the ground.”
As silly as the illustration might be, many people have a similar problem when it comes to worry. We worry a lot, and often, the worry is unfounded.
One summer while my family was on deputation, I had a very unusual schedule. I had a church booked for almost every Sunday and Wednesday. A lot of missionaries, due to Youth Camps, Jr. Camps, Family Camps, etc., don’t often have any meetings during that time. Therefore, I was excited! However, as those meetings got closer, one by one those churches contacted and had to cancel. Every meeting that I had booked for July and August was canceled!
Needless to say, I was stressed and worried that I was never going to make it to Japan. However, there was no need to worry. As we took off for our first meeting in September, I got a phone call from a military church in South Korea. They said they found our information online and, based upon what they saw, they decided as a church to take us on for support! Praise the Lord! About a week or so later, I got a call from a church in the West Indies that found us online and took us on for support! I had nothing to worry about, my Father had everything in control.
When we feel like we are starting to worry, let’s consider these 4 things.
Understand That Worry Won’t Change Anything
Matthew 6:27 - “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?”
Jesus used two examples to show that worrying about a situation is not worth it. He mentioned that we cannot either add one cubit to our height or one hour to our life by worrying. Worrying will not change a thing.
Take One Day At A Time
A quote I read says “Planning for tomorrow is time well spent. Worrying about tomorrow is time wasted.” Sadly, most people either live with regret over the past or worry over the future. Can we learn to trust God a day at a time? The scripture says that He is a God who ‘DAILY’ bears our burdens (Psalm 68:19).
Believe That God Will Take Care Of You
Matthew 6:32b - “…for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.”
God not only knows our needs, He is more than able to take care of them! We are much more valuable to Him than birds or flowers! (verses 26-30).
Seek God First
Matthew 6:33a - “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness…”
This attitude helps us place our hearts on a loving God more than having our material needs met. Let’s strive to trust Him more and worry less!
